Therapy can take a person from hurting to surviving, whereas coaching takes them from surviving to thriving.
Coaches help clients make life changes. The process involves reflection (to identify the triggers and limiting beliefs keeping a client stuck) and is usually future focused and solution based. Life coaching contracts usually are for sessions every three weeks/month to allow implementation and practice of actions that emerge from the coaching conversations together.
Coaching can never be a substitute for therapy, which usually takes place on a weekly or fortnightly basis. Only a qualified counsellor, psychotherapist, or psychologist registered with a professional regulating body should work into past wounds, provide medical or psychiatric advice, or engage in diagnosis. Whilst coaching is not regulated, it is always recommended to work with someone with a recognised qualification. I am working towards Senior Practitioner accreditation with the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) work to their strict professional codes of ethics. https://www.emccglobal.org/de/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2018/09/EMCC-Code_of_Ethics_2016.pdf I am currently an EMCC affiliated member, with full professional indemnity insurance. All coaches should have a robust supervision system in place and engage in continual professional development.
